Nellie Gorbea – a Lifetime Advocate for Abortion Rights

“I am appalled at the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v Wade. Access to abortion is a fundamental right and I’m proud that we’ve worked together to protect that right in Rhode Island, including codifying Roe into state law. As governor I will do everything in my power to ensure that Rhode Islanders will continue to have equitable access to safe and legal abortions. Passing the Rhode Island Equity in Abortion Coverage Act will be a priority for me as governor. But we shouldn’t have to wait till then- I would welcome a special session of the General Assembly to pass this law prior to January 2023.”

From its modern birth in the 1600s as a refuge for religious freedom, Rhode Island has led this country as a place that safeguards the rights of the individual.  As governor of Rhode Island, I will ensure that the Ocean State is a place where your rights are protected, and your freedoms ensured.  The decision from the Supreme Court makes it clear that governor’s races across the country are more important than ever.

I have been advocating for women’s rights my entire life. Since 1989, I have helped organize and protect women’s right to determine whether to carry a pregnancy or not. I have supported candidates and organizations that fight for women to have access to abortion and reproductive healthcare options like contraception. Now as a mother of 3 daughters, as an elected leader and candidate for governor, I once again, join this national movement that will not rest until all women can have equal rights across this country.

As governor, I would immediately sign executive orders protecting our health care providers and those from other states seeking abortions and any form of contraception from civil or criminal actions attempted by other states. I call on the General Assembly to come back for a special session to ensure equity in access to abortion to women on Medicaid and on the state’s insurance plan. The General Assembly should address this important protection as well.

Justice Clarence Thomas’ signal to the radical right in this country to further limit the rights of women and the LGTBQ+ community is a threat that should be taken seriously. We are living through the consequences of the 2016 election. Let’s make 2022 the year we fight back through the ballot box.
