Gorbea selected for national leadership role among Secretaries of State

Secretary of State Nellie M. Gorbea has been appointed to lead the National Association of Secretaries of States' Standing Committee on Voter Participation for the 2015-2016 cycle. Gorbea will co-chair the committee with Secretary of State John Merrill of Alabama.

Rhode Island set to modernize its voting equipment

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island is modernizing its voting equipment.

Governor Raimondo signed legislation Thursday authorizing Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea to purchase upgraded voting equipment and software to replace current gear that is nearly two decades old. Gorbea says she wants to modernize the equipment as part of a review of the entire elections process. She says she wants to find ways to make it easier to vote and engage more people.

Providence Journal Endorses Nellie Gorbea for Secretary of State

In their October 16 editorial page, Rhode Island's paper of record - the Providence Journal, enthusiastically endorsed Democratic nominee Nellie Gorbea for Secretary of State. The editorial board described Nellie as "a bright, energetic and articulate advocate of openness in government". They also commented the historic nature of Nellie's candidacy - she will be the first Hispanic elected general officer of a New England state.

In a recent Providence Journal article contrasting the two candidates for Secretary of State, reporter Karen Lee Ziner noted that Nellie Gorbea's opponent has made 4 previous runs for statewide office, each time under a different party affiliation - including as a Democrat. The article goes on to point out Gorbea's extensive track record of results as a former Deputy Secretary of State from 2002 to 2006.

United Steel Workers Endorse Gorbea For Secretary of State

Providence – The United Steel Workers Local 12431 has endorsed Democratic Candidate for Secretary of State, Nellie Gorbea. USW Local 12431 represents the gas workers at National Grid and has a membership of over 280 people. 

“Local 12431 is supporting Nellie because she knows what she’s doing,” stated President Doug Holmes. “Nellie’s experience is exactly what working families of Rhode Island need from their next Secretary of State.”

Providence – The Tiverton Democratic Town Committee voted last night to endorse Democrat Nellie Gorbea in her candidacy for Secretary of State.

“Nellie Gorbea accomplished many important projects in her four years as Deputy Secretary of State. She is a proven leader and definitely has what it takes to make government start working for all Rhode Islanders,” said Tiverton Democratic Town Committee Chairman Mike Burk.
